Seminar on Prevention of Sexual Harassment in Educational Institutions

  • 27 November 2019

On 27 November 2019, DSW organized a seminar on the Prevention of Sexual Harassment in Educational Institutions in association with Bangladesh Mahila Parishad and Law and Human Rights, UAP. Ms. Nazia Wahab, Assistant Professor, Law and Human Rights, UAP delivered a welcome speech while Dr. Swarnali Islam Khandaker, Head, Department of Pharmacy and Convener, Sexual Harassment Prevention Committee, UAP shared the policies of the committee against such activity at UAP Campus. Leaders of Bangladesh Mahila Parishad attended the seminar and delivered their speeches including Dr. Fouzia Moslem, Vice-Chairperson; Adv. Masuda Rehana Begum, AGS; Adv. Maksuda Akhter, Director, Legal Advocacy and Lobby; and Adv. Dipti Shikder. The theme of the seminar was ''Rape and Sexual Harassment is a Crime against Humanity - Stand against the Crime.''

Air Cdre (retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury addressed the audience as the Director, DSW. Among others, the seminar was also attended by Mr. Monzoor Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairperson, BOT; Mr. Md. Asaduzzaman, Associate Professor & Head, Department of Law & Human Rights. Around 150 students from different departments and faculty members attended the seminar.
 

Discussion on “Youth Engagement and Preventing Violent Extremism in Bangladesh” held at UAP

A discussion meeting titled “Youth Engagement and Preventing Violent Extremism in Bangladesh” was held at the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) on Sunday, April 07, 2019.

The event was organized by UAP in cooperation with the Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) and International Republican Institute (IRI). The purpose of this discussion meeting was to generate awareness among the students against the effect of violent extremism.

Dr. Geoffrey Macdonald, Resident Program Director for Bangladesh, IRI, and Air Cdre (Retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Treasurer, and Director, Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), UAP presented papers, while Mr. ASM Ali Ashraf, Associate Professor, Department of International Relations, Dhaka University, Mr. Sohrab Hassan, Joint Editor, The Daily Prothom Alo, and Mr. Mohammad Humayun Kabir, Director General, BEI addressed the session as discussants. A lively Q&A session followed the presentations.

National Professor Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, VC, UAP, and Engr. M. Abu Taher, Member, Board of Trustees (BOT) addressed the closing session as Special Guests.

A large number of faculty and invited guests were present on the occasion. A number of students from other universities in the Dhaka area joined the program.

 

Lecture on "Genocide and the Bangladesh Case" at UAP

The Directorate of Students' Welfare (DSW), UAP organized a lecture on "Genocide and the Bangladesh Case" at DBA on May 22, 2017.

Professor Adam Jones, Ph.D., Political Science, University of British Columbia, Okanagan, Kelowna, Canada delivered his speech on that topic. He discussed the concept of genocide and its strategic facts. The discussion has a great political interest and should draw an important simile from Bangladesh's experience.

Among others, Air Commodore Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Director, DSW & Treasurer, UAP, faculty members, and students have attended the workshop.

 

 

DSW organizes Photo Exhibition and Presentation on Birds

  • May 18, 2017

 

Directorate of Student Welfare (DSW), UAP organized a photo exhibition and PowerPoint presentation on birds of Bangladesh at the Department of Business Administration (DBA) on May 18, 2017.

Mr. Enam Ul Haque, a famous bird photographer, explorer, and nature preservationist conducted both the session and displayed his own photography at home and abroad. He is the first Bangladeshi to have landed in the Antarctic for photography and also the only Bangladeshi so far to have reached the North Pole.

 

Architect Mahbuba Haque, Member, BOT, UAP inaugurated the program as the Chief Guest, while Professor Sayeed M. Ahmed, Dean, Faculty of Environmental Science & Design, UAP, and Air Commodore Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Director, DSW and Treasurer, UAP were present as the Special Guests. Among others, student members of the UAP Social Awareness Club and Photography Club were also present. The presentation was followed by a Q & A session.

 

 

Lecture on "Significance of Mujibnagar Day" at UAP

A lecture on "Significance of Mujibnagar Day" was held at the Department of Business Administration (DBA) on May 04, 2017. DWS, UAP organized the lecture so that the students can know the real history of the independence of Bangladesh and the significance of Mujibnagar days during the period.

Barrister M. Amir-Ul Islam, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of Bangladesh was the resource person. Mr. Islam, the author of the proclamation of independence of Bangladesh, discussed the eventful and memorable Mujibnagar days and the role played by the Mujibnagar government during the nine-month-long War of Independence of Bangladesh in 1971.

The session was attended by Professor Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor, UAP, Mr. Qayum Reza Chowdhury, Chairman, BOT, Professor Emeritus Abdul Matin Patwari, former Vice-Chancellor, UAP, Professor Dr. M. DSW organized a workshop on Effective Problem Solving Skills

  • January 17, 2019

 

On January 17, 2019, The Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), UAP, and in association with Casper Foundation organized a one and half-hour long workshop on Effective Problem Solving Skills.

Mr. Taufiq uz Zaman, CEO, and Founder, Casper Foundation conducted the workshop. In the workshop, the participants were able to know how to solve a problem whether it’s personal, professional, or business projects-related. Mr. Zaman presented the Effective Problem Solving Model for the participants. He showed how to prepare a need assessment of the problem first and then making a plan to execute to solve the problem. He said that an evaluation report should be made after the execution to identify the effectiveness of the solution. He showed the next steps based on the evaluation report. The lecture of Mr. Zaman gave the participants a way to solve any problem step by step.

DSW organizes a series of events based on an MOU signed with the Casper Foundation. Among others, the workshop was also attended by Air Cdre Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Director, DSW; Mr. Arman Ahmed Khan, Treasurer and Founding Member, Casper Foundation; Mr. Bishwamitra Chowdhury, Chief of Operations, CareerKi; Md Wahidul Haque, Social Project Manager, IDKIDS; and Md Tarek Khan, Assistant Director, DSW.

 

 

Workshop on Gender Issues held at UAP

  • 27 January 2018

 

Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), University of Asia Pacific organized a day-long program titled “Workshop on Gender Issues” on 27 January 2018 at UAP Plaza. The event was supported by the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU).

Among 90 applications from universities in 28 countries of the Commonwealth, 10 universities received the grant. UAP was the only recipient from Bangladesh. Prof. Firdous Azim, Chairperson, Department of English and Humanities, BRAC University was the lead facilitator of the workshop. Others were, Prof. Ainoon Naher, Department of Anthropology, Jahangirnagar University; Ayesha Banu, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Women and Gender Studies, University of Dhaka and Seuty Sabur, Associate Professor, Department of Economics and Social Sciences, BRAC University. The resource persons covered a wide range of topics, including, Sex, Gender & Sexuality: Social and Cultural issues, Women’s Movements in Bangladesh, Sexual Harassment and Violence against Women, Review of Sexual Harassment Measures and Special Provisions for Women, such as Maternity Leave and Child Care Facilities.

Mr. Qayum Reza Chowdhury, Treasurer of the Board of Trustees, University of Asia Pacific, and Prof. Perween Hasan, Vice-Chancellor, Central Women’s University were present as the Chief Guest and Special Guest respectively.

Students and faculty from the University of Dhaka, Jahangirnagar University, North South University, BRAC University, East-West University, Central Women’s University, and the University of Asia Pacific participated in the workshop with great enthusiasm. Air Cdre (Retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Director, DSW, UAP ended the workshop with a vote of thanks.

UAP Students participated in the 4th AUAP Students English Speech Competition at Sias University, China

  • November 03 – 07, 2019

Two students of the University of Asia Pacific recently participated in an international speech competition titled the 4th Students English Speech Competition (SESC) organized by The Association of Universities of Asia and the Pacific (AUAP) from November 03 – 07, 2019 at Sias University, Zhengzhou, China. Students and teachers from various countries attended the event. From Bangladesh, only the University of Asia Pacific participated. Maisha Rahman Meem, Student, Department of English, and Abu Noman Md. Rezwan, Student, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, UAP, participated in the competition. Ms. Afroza Aziz Suchana, Assistant Professor, Department of English and adviser, English Language Club joined the program as their tutor.

The competition gave the participants great exposure to the world of public speaking. “The moments of the stage were the most exhilarating experience. Those five-minute speeches were the most nerve-racking experience but also the most fulfilling moment of my life,” said Maisha Rahman Meem. The competition was a big platform for the participants to know about diversified cultures. “We learned about the cultures of other people and shared our culture with them,” mentioned Abu Noman Mohammad Rezwan.

Along with delivering their speeches on an international platform, the participants experienced the mesmerizing surroundings of the Sias University campus. It was a visual treat to watch. The host university offered a day-long tour for the participants. Sias university representatives took them to visit the Chinese historical places – the Shaolin Temple and Dengfeng Observatory. The participants also visited the beautiful Pagoda forest and enjoyed a Kung Fu show. The participants of UAP gained new experiences and insights through the event. It was a great opportunity for them to showcase their talents in delivering their speeches and represent Bangladesh on an international platform.

 


 

UAP participated in the Green University HR Mela

UAP participated in the Green University HR Mela organized by Green University Business School on 18 April 2019 at its city campus. A team from the Department of Business Administration participated in the HR Mela. The team members were- Mubashir Hasan Khan, Salman Ahmed Afnan, Jannath Sharmin Chowdhury, and Sushmita Jerin.

Prof. Md. Golam Samdani Fakir, Vice-Chancellor, Green University was the Chief Guest of the program. Among others, Professor Dr. Muhammad Fayyaz Khan, Pro VC; Prof. Dr. Golam Ahmed Faruqui, Dean, Business School; faculty members, and students from different departments of Green University attended the program.

A number of teams from different universities participated in the HR Mela where Mr. Md. Tarek Khan, Assistant Director, DSW, UAP delivered a lecture on “life, goal-setting, and success” as an invited guest.

 

 

Uddokta Summit-2018 

  • 7-8 December 2018

A 2-daylong Uddokta Summit-2018, jointly organized by the University of Asia Pacific and Bangladesh Open Source Network (BdOSN) was held on the university campus from 7-8 December 2018. The objective of the summit was to build awareness and create new ideas of entrepreneurship among Bangladeshi youth. National Professor Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Honourable Vice-Chancellor of UAP inaugurated the event as the Chief Guest. While addressing the audience, he said that Bangladesh economy had reached a sustainable stage of development and the information-technology related products and services could help accelerate progress. Professor Choudhury also said, “We have to create skilled manpower; we need to create jobs for the growing population. New ideas and innovations and creative entrepreneurship could be key factors in the country’s growth.”

Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) Executive Chairman Kazi Aminul Islam said that there are around 25 lakh unemployed youth in Bangladesh who might be looking for jobs but they were unaware of the possibilities of creating new jobs as an entrepreneur.

Dr. Mohammed Alauddin, Sr. Vice-Chairman, Member, Board of Trustees (BOT) of UAP attended the summit as a Special Guest. Mr. Anhar Ahmed Chowdhury, Member, BOT, facilitated an interesting “Leadership Workshop.” Ms. Tashmeem Shayera Moyeen, Member, Board of Trustees, UAP attended a session titled “Exploring Personal Care Zone” where she suggested different ways to eradicate gender-related sigma from society. Mr. Alamzeb Farjad Ahmed, Member, BOT, UAP along with Mr. G. Sumdany Don, a renowned Corporate facilitated a workshop titled “Finding Entrepreneurial Ability of the Students.”

Air Cdre (Retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Director, DSW chaired the inaugural session and coordinated the events. Among others, the summit was also attended by Mr. Munir Hasan, Coordinator, Youth Programme, Prothom Alo and Founder, BdOSN; Mr. Mominul Islam, Managing Director & CEO, IPDC Finance Ltd.; Mr. Mostafizur Rahman, Project Director, a2i, Government of Bangladesh.The two-day event comprised of 10 sessions, 4 workshops, 45 stalls to exhibit the products and services. Besides a large number of UAP students and faculty from various departments, the summit attracted over 500 potential entrepreneurs from across the country.

 

 

UAP student in Champion Team in Agragami 2017: A leadership program by Common Purpose and MCCI

Agragami 2017, a leadership program jointly organized by Common Purpose, Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), Grey Bangladesh, and Dhaka South City Corporation. The Grand Finale held on 13 May 2018 at the International Convention Centre, Basundhara, Dhaka. Md. Ahashanul Hoque Mollah, Department of Pharmacy, University of Asia Pacific was the team member of the winning team.

Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, KCMG, the founder and Chairman of BRAC was present as the Chief Guest while Mrs. Laila Rahman Kabir, Managing Director, Kedarpur Tea Co. Ltd; Dr. Mohammed Farashuddin, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, East-West University; and Mr. M Anis Ud Dowla, Chairman of ACI Limited were present as the Special Guests. Ms. Nihad Kabir, President of MCCI, Dhaka presided over the session.

Earlier, a 5-day long leadership program for university students across Dhaka city was held in Gulshan from 16 October 2017 to 20 October 2017 where the honorable Mayor Mr. Mohammad Sayeed Khokon, State Minister Mr. Nasrul Hamid, and many more guided the students towards leadership and briefed on the current issues of Dhaka city.

The objective was to bring a change in Dhaka city with the theme- "How to make Dhaka a smart and inclusive city?" The students were taken to visits ICT Ministry, Mutual Trust Bank, Jaago Foundation, Grey Bangladesh, Center for Urban Studies, Uber, bKash Limited & Maasranga TV to deepen the understanding of the students about urban problems.

Eleven students from UAP participated in the leadership program where two students from the Department of Pharmacy, Md. Ahashanul Hoque Mollah and Samiha Mehnaz were in two teams that reached the final position. Ultimately Ahasanul Haque’s team became the Champion. Hundreds of students from various universities of the Dhaka area, including 65 from UAP, attended the Grand Finale.

 

 

UAP Participated in the Assembly on Higher Education at the University of Dhaka

Department of International Relations and Department of History, University of Dhaka, and The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), a German-based think-tank, jointly organized an Assembly on Higher Education on 11 March 2018 from 10 AM-1 PM at the Senate Hall, Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban, University of Dhaka.

The event, the first of its kind in Bangladesh, was participated by the governing bodies, faculty members, and students from both public and private universities. The main objective of the assembly was to brainstorm on challenges and opportunities facing the higher education sector in Bangladesh and to propose recommendations for achieving global competitiveness in teaching, learning, and research. Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, KCMG, the Founder and Chairman of BRAC was the keynote speaker at the Assembly.

German Ambassador to Bangladesh Dr. Thomas Prinz, North South University Vice-Chancellor Professor Atique Islam, Independent University Bangladesh Vice-Chancellor Professor M Omar Rahman, Rajshahi University Pro Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Ananda Kumar Saha was present as Guests of Honor, among others. Professor Dr. Nasreen Ahmad, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Dhaka presided over the conference. Professor Imtiaz Ahmed of the Department of International Relations, University of Dhaka conducted the program.

A group of fifteen students from UAP led by Md. Tarek Khan, Assistant Director, Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), UAP participated in the assembly.

 

 

Participation in “The ACU Respect Residential School Program,” 2017

“ACU Respect Residential School”- an international leadership program organized by the Association of Commonwealth Universities in association with Common Purpose and Heriot-Watt University Malaysia with the vision - “We develop leaders who can cross boundaries” from 18-21 December 2017 at Heriot-Watt University, Malaysia

Samiha Mehnaz, a student of the Department of Pharmacy of the University of Asia Pacific, was one of the 30 delegates from twenty of the Commonwealth Countries. The ACU’s Respect campaign has brought together the student leaders from diverse communities to develop respect and understanding among the students of different countries and to enhance their leadership quality in their home institutions and beyond. The students got the opportunity to explore the culture, language, lifestyle, socio-economic condition, and political aspects of different communities of different nationalities.

A combination of lectures, keynote sessions, café conversations, and immersion visits facilitated the students to understand the challenge, “what can be done to create a tolerant and inclusive educational environment in their institutions and beyond?” The participants got valuable advice from activists from Mythos Labs, Global Peace Foundation, and Justice for Sisters, Sisters in Islam, and Commonwealth Secretariat.

At the end of the program, the students have cultivated innovative ideas to make their home institutions more inclusive education friendly. Samiha Mehnaz along with her team presented the idea of introducing tri-sector leadership to support and promote respect and understanding among the students of diverse communities in their respective home institutions and beyond with the view of making a peaceful environment in the educational institutions and other respective institutions all over the world.

 

 

UAP students perform at BUP Cultural Fest 2017

A group of 20 students of UAP participated in the Inter-University Cultural Fest-2017 organized by Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) on September 22, 2017.

The team decorated their program with a combination of patriotic songs, dancing, recitation, and drama. The performance has themed the history of Bangladesh’s independence starting from the year 1948. The festival was arranged by BUP Cultural Forum. The UAP team was coordinated by Layeqa Bashir, Assistant Professor, BS&H, UAP.

MOU between the University of Asia Pacific and SMEC Bangladesh

  • 20th November 2019

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Department of Civil Engineering and SMEC Bangladesh on 20th November 2019 at Vice Chancellor’s Conference Room.

Professor Dr. Farzana Rahman, Head, Department of Civil Engineering, and Dr. Sayeed Ahmed, Executive Director, SMEC, Bangladesh signed the MoU on behalf of their respective sides. According to the agreement, UAP graduates will be given fast track access to SMEC jobs, SMEC will deliver seminars and professionals presentations on a regular basis, A SMEC Medal will be awarded to the best performing graduating student, SMEC will offer an internship to about 20 students each year, with a duration of 1 month, during the break between 3rd and 4th year and SMEC will fund a few post-graduate level research projects undertaken by the Civil Engineering of UAP which are of national importance.

UAP signs an MOU with Wadhwani Foundation

On 18 November 2019, UAP signed a skill development association MOU with USA based Wadhwani Foundation, philanthropic career development, and entrepreneurial related service provider, to improve the soft skill set of UAP students and making them employment-ready for the growing economy of Bangladesh. UAP and Wadhwani Foundation will work towards achieving superior placement, retention, and progression outcomes as a result of transformational employability training and assessments of students through e-content and enhanced teacher quality through structured faculty development programs. There will be a total of 100 lessons to be completed in 2 semesters. Most of the modules are online-based to be monitored and facilitated by nominated personnel of UAP.

Air Cdre (Retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Director, DSW and Mr. Sunil Dahiya, Executive Vice President- Skilling, Wadhwani Foundation signed the MOU on behalf of the respective organizations while Mr. Monzoor Ahmed Chowdhury, Chairperson, BOT; National Prof. Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor; Prof. Dr. M. R. Kabir, Pro-Vice-Chancellor were present.

The MOU signing ceremony was also attended by Prof. Dr. Mohammed Tareque Aziz, Head, Department of Business Administration; Dr. Nehreen Majed, Associate Prof., Department of Civil Engineering and Director, Office of International Affairs, and Mr. Estanul Kabir, Country Program Manager, Bangladesh, Wadhwani Foundation.


 

UAP signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with BRAC IT Services Ltd.

University of Asia Pacific and BRAC IT Services Ltd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 23 October 2018 in order to extend the opportunities of employment and internship, arrange career-related programs, and sharpen the required skill-set of the students of UAP for the job market.

Air Commodore Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury (Retd.), Director, Directorate of Students’ Welfare, the University of Asia Pacific, and Ms. Ismat Jahan, Senior Manager, HR, & Communications, BRAC IT Services Ltd. signed the MoU.

Prof. Dr. M. R. Kabir, Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University of Asia Pacific graced the occasion with his presence. Among others, Md. Tarek Khan, Assistant Director, Directorate of Students’ Welfare, University of Asia Pacific, and Mohammad Shahadat Kabir, Head of Project Management Office, and Md. “Pitha Utshob” 

  • 4 January 2018

Directorate of Students’ Welfare, University of Asia Pacific organized a “Pitha Utshob” on 14 January 2018, to celebrate the winter with home-made pithas at its plaza.

 

The program was also attended by, Prof. Dr. M. R. Kabir, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Air Cdre Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury (Retd.), Director, Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), Registrar Sarwar R. Chowdhury, and faculty members. Students from all departments enjoyed the occasion with delight and enthusiasm. Prof. Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor, and Mr. Qayum Reza Choudhury, Chairman, Board of Trustees, UAP were present in the ceremony as the Chief Guest and Special Guest respectively. Students from several departments brought a variety of beautiful and delicious ‘traditional pithas’.

 

 

UAP signed a Memorandum of Understanding with The Daily Star

  • 31st July 2017

University of Asia Pacific and The Daily Star signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 31st July 2017 in order to increase the English skill-set of UAP students.

Under the MoU, The Daily Star will provide copies of the newspaper to the Central English Club of UAP. Mr. Mahfuz Anam, Editor, and Publisher, The Daily Star said, this initiative will encourage the students to become active citizens by knowing issues, problems, and prospects on different socio-economic aspects of Bangladesh and international affairs.

Air Commodore Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury (Retd.), Treasurer and Director, Directorate of Students’ Welfare, University of Asia Pacific, and Mr. Mizanur Rahman, General Manager (Finance and Administration), The Daily Star signed the MoU.

Prof. Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor, University of Asia Pacific, and Mahfuz Anam, Editor and Publisher, adorned the signing ceremony with their presence. UAP signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Chakri.com

University of Asia Pacific and Chakri.com signed a Memorandum of Understanding on 31st July 2017 in order to organize a Career Fair, Workshop, and Seminar in connection to Career Guidance, Career Development and offer employment opportunities to UAP alumni and students.

Under the MoU, Chakri.com will arrange two career fairs, three career-related workshops and seminars. The events will allow UAP alumni and students to design and develop their career paths; hone necessary soft-skills for the current job market of Bangladesh.

Air Commodore Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury (retd.), Treasurer and Director, Directorate of Students’ Welfare, University of Asia Pacific and Mr. Ahteram Uddin, Chief Operating Officer, ProthomAlo Digital signed the MoU. Prof. Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor, University of Asia adorned the signing ceremony with his presence. Mr. Sarwar R Chowdhury, Registrar, Mr. Md. Introduction of a book on War Babies of 1971 at UAP

Mr. Mostafa Choudhury, a Canadian citizen of Bangladeshi origin, has introduced a well-researched book on "War Babies of 71: The Unwritten Story" at the Seminar Room of the Department of Business Administration (DBA) of the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) on 16 February 2017.

The book in an indictment of the men who perpetrated one of the cruelest genocide in modern times and a tribute to the warmth of heart of the fourteen families in Canada who volunteered to adopt fifteen of the many babies born during the Bangladesh war of liberation.

Professor Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor chaired and addressed the program while Mr. Qayum Reza Chowdhury, Chairman, BOT, UAP delivered his speech as the Special Guest and Air Commodore Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Treasurer moderated the event. Among others, Members of the BOT, faculty and students have attended the book introduction program.
