IEEE POWER & ENERGY SOCIETY (PES) DAY CELEBRATION

IEEE Power and Energy Society (PES) day is celebrated globally by the IEEE communities to build awareness on sustainable power generation and to celebrate the name changing history of Power Engineering Society.

With the theme ‘More Power to the Future’ IEEE University of Asia Pacific student branch in association with IEEE UAP student branch Women in Engineering (WIE) affinity group has celebrated IEEE PES Day 2019. Thecelebration was segmented into two phases. First phase was celebrated with a “Line Follower Robot Competition” event which came to pass on May 12, 2019. Project Club EEE, UAP was included in the convener committee of this competition event as well. Prof. Dr. M. R. Kabir, Pro Vice Chancellor, UAP glorified the event with his august presence as the chief guest. Dr. Tapan Kumar Chakraborty, Head, Dept. of EEE presided over the event. By minute scrutiny by honorable judges, 2 teams ‘UAP_WALL-E_BOT’ and ‘UAP_ALIEN_BOT’ were declared as champion and runner-up respectively. At that event respectable speakers expressed their optimism to evolve teams that pursue interest in robotics and mechatronics through such events.

Due to midterm examination and the Eid Vacation, the second phase of the event was held after a delay on June 19, 2019. The event was comprised of quiz competition, idea generation session; focusing on power generation and renewable energy. The program was chaired by departmental Head of EEE, UAP and the faculties attended as well. After the competition segments reverend speakers kept their remarks on IEEE PES day and urged the students to be thoughtful on sustainable development of power and energy sector. The program ended with cutting the celebration cake of the PES Day 2019.

 


PES Day 2018 Celebrated at UAP by IEEE UAP WIE SB and IEEE WIE BDS

With the aim for ‘More Power to the Future’, IEEE BDS WIE AG in association with IEEE UAP SB WIE AG celebrated IEEE PES DAY 2018 at University of Asia Pacific, Dhaka, Bangladesh on this Saturday, 28 April 2018 with the support of IEEE UAP SB.

In this event, IEEE Bangladesh Section Chair & Professor, EEE, BUET, Prof. Dr. Celia Shahnaz was present along with Nafisa Zarrin Tasnim, Assistant Engineer, Energypac Engineering Ltd, Tasnuva Binte Anowar, Assistant Engineer, DPDC; Shoile Chakma, Lecturer, AIT, BUET and Purnata Roy, Assistant Engineer, DESCO and share their experience in academia and power sectors. In addition to that, Anamika Bhakta, Vice President, Regulatory Affairs, Robi Axiata Ltd and Chair, IEEE WIE BDS as well as Asma Huque, Consultant, ADB were also present in the event. The speakers encouraged the participants for giving more emphasize in the field of power and energy focusing on how vast working opportunity lies in this field.

This joyful event was attended by large number of students and faculties from different universities. The event was later followed by an exciting quiz competition with attractive gifts for the winners. Finally, the PES day was celebrated by cake cutting ceremony and a human chain where the faculties, students as well as the speakers were participated for demonstrating PES DAY.

The IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), formerly the IEEE Power Engineering Society, is the oldest society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers focused on the scientific and engineering knowledge about electric power and energy. Currently it is having total 37035 members around the world with 230 affiliated chapters. In every year 22 April has been declared as the PES Day by this society.

 

IEEE UAP WIE AG Inauguration @ ICCIT

An inauguration of IEEE UAP WIE AG was celebrated along with a WIE track "Women in Engineering, Entrepreneurship & Leadership" organized by IEEE WIE Bangladesh Section and supported by IEEE UAP Student branch in the ICCIT 2017 at University of Asia Pacific, Dhaka, Bangladesh on December 24, 2017.  In this event, Dr. Celia Shahnaz, Professor, EEE, BUET; Mehjabeen Mahbub, Experienced Integration Engineer, LM Ericsson, Bangladesh; and Syeda Kamrun Ahmed, Co-founder, and former CEO, BAGDOOM.com (former ekhoni.com) were present and shared their journey to excellence in Academia, Industry, and Entrepreneurship, respectively.
This joyful event was attended by a huge number of students from different departments, faculties as well as some invited speakers and guests of ICCIT 2017. 
IEEE UAP Student Branch got the approval to form WIE Affinity Group in Bangladesh Section in 28 September, 2017. Currently, this student branch has more than 55 student Members out of which over 15 are female student members.
 

Project Exhibition-2017 IEEE UAP SB & EEE Project Club

Focusing on the current technological trend, IEEE UAP Student Branch and UAP EEE Project Club organized a day long 'Project Exhibition 2017' on 23 November 2017 in UAP Plaza. Total 18 projects from both IoT and Assistive Technology categories were displayed which induced a festive mood in the whole department of EEE. This event was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. Abdul Matin Patwari, Professor Emeritus and Former VC, UAP. The energetic day came to an end with a 'Prize Awarding Ceremony' in which Prof. Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, VC, UAP remained as the chief guest. This exhibition was also visited by Mr. Qayum Reza Chowdhury, Chairman, BoT which created additional enthusiasm to the participants.

 

 

10th Anniversary of UAP EEE department

  • August 21 and 22, 2014

 

10th anniversary of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of University of Asia Pacific (UAP) was observed with a two-day comprehensive program on August 21 and 22, 2014. Dr. Abdul Matin Patwari, Professor Emeritus and former VC UAP inaugurated the ceremony while Professor Jamilur Reza Choudhury, VC UAP attended the program as chief guest. Professor Dr. M. R. Kabir, Pro VC attended the program as special guest while Dr. Md. Sekendar Ali, Professor and Head, EEE presided over the ceremony.

Two-day's program includes rally, Quiz Competition, Poster and Project Presentation, photography exhibition, seminar on Electrical & Electronic Industries in Bangladesh: Prospects & Challenges, Discussion on higher studies, job fair, treasure hunt, seminar on career development, alumni reunion and a prize giving ceremony followed by cultural program at UAP Muktamancha. Students, staffs, faculties and alumni attended and enjoyed the program.

Department of EEE organizes workshop on “Design of a 9MWp Grid-Tied Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant”

  • 14 July 2019

 

On Sunday (14 July 2019), a workshop on “Design of a 9MWp Grid-Tied Solar Photovoltaic Power Plant” was held at Room No-513 of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) at University of Asia Pacific (UAP). Prof. Dr. Muhammad Riazul Hamid, CEO and Principal Consultant, Green Pro BD and former professor, Department of EEE, Ahsanuallah University of Science and Technology (AUST) was the resource person. Head of the Department, Faculty members of EEE and final year students were present on the workshop.

Prof. Riaz started the workshop by describing the current electricity generation scenario from solar energy in Bangladesh. He showed physical solar PV based Power Plant and its aspects. Later he conducted the workshop how to design a solar PV based power plant and what are the procedures to follow during design. He explained different design tools to conduct the complete task. Professor encouraged the students to learn some design software which will required in designing such type of project.

In the second half, he provided some essential career tips to the final year students to build their career in different emerging field of engineering and encouraged not to depend on job rather than try to find solutions for current problems in industry. Finally the workshop has ended by Q&A session.

 

 

 

IEEE UAP SB organized a workshop on "Soccer-Bot" (Introductory level)

  • January 20, 2018

 

IEEE UAP Student Branch started its 2018's journey with an extensive workshop on "Soccer Robot". Its first module was held on January 20, 2018, Saturday. The workshop was conducted by Planeter Ltd., a young but enthusiastic company which is currently working in a government funded humanoid robot project.

Total 78 students from UAP as well as IEEE SBs from some other universities (like IEEE IUB SB) participated in this hands-on training event.

The first module covered the review of basic components and ideas for Soccer-bot. Based on the remarkable response of the students, IEEE UAP SB is planning to organize the "second module" of this workshop in the up-coming week.

 

 

 

IEEE UAP SB organized a day long workshop on 'Android App Development'

As the new semester starts, IEEE UAP Student Branch organized a day long (10.30am - 6.00pm) workshop on ‘Introductory Android Application Development’ on 20 October 2017, Friday. Despite rough weather 33 students including IEEE student members of UAP attended the workshop.

The workshop was conducted by trainers from IEEE University of Dhaka (DU) Student Branch as a part of ‘Anticlockwise Program’. Anticlockwise is a collaborative platform presented by IEEE Bangladesh Section (BDS) Student Activity Committee (SAC), where student members across different branches interact and learn from each other through executing a series of inter-branch training sessions on relevant technical topics.

 

 

 


IEEE UAP SB and EEE Project Club jointly Organized a Workshop on Ardiuno

IEEE UAP Student Branch (SB) and EEE Project club jointly organized a day-long workshop on 'Ardiuno' on 19 May 2017. The workshop was conducted by Md. Khairul Alam, Lecturer, EEE & Convener, EEE Project Club; Anas Syed, Assistant Professor, EEE and Sakhawat Hossen Rakib, Lecturer, EEE.

This workshop was attended by 65 students from both EEE and CSE department of UAP including IEEE members of this branch. In this event, participants were given hands on training on Ardiuno kit that included introduction to micro-controller and various kits, use of Ardiuno kit and Ardiuno softwares, writing a program and loading it to microcontroller, temperature sensor operation and working with serial data and lastly, working with LED display.

A follow up session of this workshop will be arranged soon.

 

 

 

 

IEEE UAP SB organized a Workshop on 'PCB Design' with support of IEEE WIE AG BS

IEEE UAP SB organized a two hour long workshop technically supported by IEEE WIE (Women in Engineering) Affinity Group Bangladesh Section on 'Introductory PCB Design' on 20 May 2017, Saturday from 11.00am – 1.00pm.

This workshop was conducted by two executive members of IEEE WIE AG BS, Shoilie Chakma, Lecturer, EEE, BUET; Treasurer, WIE AG Bangladesh Section & Irtiza Haque, System Engineer, Service Operations, Grameenphone Ltd.; Professional Activities Coordinator, WIE AG BS. In this workshop the participants were given hands on training to the introductory designing of PCB layout using 'Labcenter Proteus' software. Total 25 IEEE student members from both EEE and CSE department of UAP participated in that workshop. Dr. Tapan Kumar Chakraborty, Professor, EEE was present on the workshop and awarded the trainers with 'certificate of appreciation' on behalf of the IEEE UAP SB.

IEEE UAP Student branch was formed in November 2015 and since then it has been organizing several events for the benefit of the students. At present (when the report is being processed) the student branch has 43 student members from department of EEE and CSE.

EEE Dept. organized a Seminar on "Optical Communication" by Stanford University Professor

  • March 27, 2018

 

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of University of Asia Pacific (UAP) organized a seminar on “Principles of Coherent Optical Communication” on March 27, 2018 in association with IEEE UAP Student Branch and IEEE Communication Society Bangladesh Chapter.

In this seminar eminent scholar and IEEE Fellow Joseph M. Kahn, currently working as Professor at Department of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University, CA, USA remained as the keynote speaker. The event was heartily attended by faculties and students from UAP and other universities.

With numerous achievements in the field of optical fiber communication system, Joseph M. Kahn worked at AT&T Bell Laboratories, Crawford Hill Laboratory as well as StrataLight Communications as the Chief Scientist. Currently he is the head of Optical Communication Group in Stanford University.

 

 

 

Seminar on 'Concept of Green Building Design'

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of University of Asia Pacific (UAP) organized a seminar on Concept of Green Building Design : USGBC LEED Approach” on March 19, 2018, Monday  in association with IEEE UAP Student Branch. In this seminar Dr. Muhammad Riazul Hamid, Professor, Dept. of EEE, Ahsanullah University of Science and Technology (AUST) remained as the keynote speaker. Various features of green building designs were discussed in the seminar. 


 

 

 

IEEE UAP Student Branch Organized Seminar on 'Data Center Technology'

IEEE UAP Student Branch organized a two hour long seminar on 'Seminar on Data Center Technology and Career Counseling' on May 3, 2017 (Wednesday) which was presented by Khan Muhammad Fuad Bin Enayet, Assistant General Manager, Fiber@Home Limited, Bangladesh. The Seminar was attended by students including IEEE student members as well as UAP faculties. Various aspects of data center were elaborately discussed along with the scope of career (both in home and abroad) in this field.

IEEE UAP Student branch was formed in November 2015 and since then it has been organizing several events for the benefit of the students. At present, the student branch has 34 members from department of EEE and CSE.

 

 

 

IEEE UAP organized a seminar on 'Smart Grid'

IEEE UAP Student Branch organized a seminar on 'Smart Grid: Self-healing and Energy Efficient Power Grid' at the department of EEE on April 27, 2017. Dr. Jahangir Hossain, Associate Professor, Department of Engineering, Faculty of Science, Macquaire University NSW 2109, Australia, was the keynote speaker. The Seminar was attended by students including IEEE student members as well as UAP faculties.

IEEE UAP Student branch was formed in November 2015 and since then it has been organizing several events which is beneficial for the students. At present, the student branch has 19 students from department of EEE and CSE.

 

 

Seminar on Electrical Services for Buildings and Industries

A seminar on "Electrical Services for Buildings and Industries" was head at the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) of University of Asia Pacific (UAP) on 30 May 2015. Engineer Md. Shah AlamTalukder, Fellow IEB and a renowned consultant in field of Electrical Services Design addressed the seminar as the Chief Speaker and Head, EEE, Professor Dr. Md. Sekendar Ali was also present. In this modern age, the volume and dimensions of electrical services design have expanded to a greater level. The necessity of protective design has also been felt by the engineering community. Engineer Talukder shared his more than forty years' experience in electrical service design and explained some important rules and regulations of safe design practice. He also showed and explained some practical design drawings which gave the audience a glimpse of practical scenario. More than fifty teachers and students of the Department attended the seminar. Mr.Talukder handed over his book titled 'Electrical Services Design' and some supporting documents to the Department of EEE for academic purposes.

Study Tour of EEE students at Karnafuli Hydro Electric Power Station

  • January 06-12, 2018

 

The Department of EEE arranged a long study tour from January 06-12, 2018 as part of their co-curricular activities at Karnafuli Hydro Electric Power Station and Cox’s Bazar 230/132KV grid sub-station.

A number of 77 students took part in the excursion, guided by four faculty members, Dr. Mahmudul Alam, Md. Moshiur Rahman, Shaikh Rashedur Rahman and Farhana Akter Mou visited Karnafuli Hydro Electric Power Station on 8th January 2018. During visiting Karnafuli Hydro Electric Power Station the students saw the dam, spillway, power house, generator, control unit, transformers and other operating machines, where they faced very practical experiences.

On the very next day, students and faculty members visited Cox’s Bazar 230/132KV grid sub-station where one Assistant Engineer and three Sub-Assistant Engineers have guided them to visit different parts of the sub-station.

 

 

 

Annual Picnic 2017 of EEE Department

The Annual Picnic 2017 of the Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, University of Asia Pacific (UAP) was organized on January 19, 2017. The Picnic spot was at Sonargaon Museum, BACE Training Centre & Panam City.

The event was successfully organized by the Faculty and students of the Department. A total of 20 Faculty and Staff and 310 students were particiapated the picnic.

In short, the picnic was a fantastic chance for the students to relax and spend some leisure time together. Such event is necessary to enhance the student-teacher relationship of the department.

 

 

 

Industrial visit of EEE Students to Mymenshing Power Station, Mymenshing

  • 26 November, 2016

Mymenshing 210 MW Combined Cycle Power Station is the state of the art Power Station in Bangladesh by Rural Power Company Ltd. (RPCL) situated in Shambhuganj, Mymenshing. The Power Station is run by 140 MW Gas Turbine and 70 MW Steam Turbine and also has an ETP plant. The Station has started its commercial operation through 70 MW in 1999 which reached to 140 MW by the very next year. In 2007 it reaches its full capacity to 210 MW. Till establishment several times this Power Station rewarded as "The best Power Station in public sector".

A no. of 36 4th year 1st semester students guided by three faculty members, named Muhammad Ahad Rahman Miah, Md. Moshiur Rahman and Md. Khairul Alam have visited the aforementioned Power Station on Saturday 26 November, 2016. Two Assistant Engineers have guided them to visit different parts of the station also a short video presentation has shown. Lastly on behalf of the Department a Crest has presented to RPCL with appreciation.

 

 

 

Study Tour of EEE 4th Year 1st Semester Students to Summit Narayanganj Power Plant

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Asia pacific organized a day-long course-based study tour for 4thyear 1st semester students as a part of its co-curricular activities. Thirty (30) students accompanied by two faculty members (JubairSieed, Assistant Professor & Khalid IbneMasood, Lecturer) visited Summit Narayangonj 102Mega Watt Power Plant on 20th June, 2014. Summit Group is the largest private sector power producer of the country with installed capacity of around 700MWin total and 600MW of generation capacity under construction. Students of EEE, UAP visited the group's Narayangonj Power Plant which operates with six HFO fuel based engines with individual capacity of 17MW each. Deputy Plant Manager Mr. Faridul Islam briefed the students about the operating procedures of their plant with animated video and power point presentation. He also explained the queries of the students. Later there was an arrangement of guided tour around the power plant and its different sections such as control room, sub-station, fuel-processing unit, chemical test facility, engine room etc. The plant authority also arranged for light refreshments for the visitors. The tour ended with a vote of thanks from UAP to Summit Narayangonj Power Company Limited. Students received a glimpse of actual power plant experience from this tour which would definitely come out handy in their future endeavors.

EEE Faculty and student participates National Science Fair-2016

  • December 7-10, 2016

The National Power and Energy Week-2016 (The 'JatiyaBidyut Saptaha-2016') was held from December 7-10, 2016 in International Convention City of Bashundhara, Dhaka.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, inaugurated the program as chief guest. The theme of this year's 'Power and Energy Week' is 'Odomya Bangladesh' or Indomitable Bangladesh. For the purpose of participating in this very big event of science fair, concerned faculties and students of different universities and institutions across the country submitted their project to Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).

Department of EEE,UAP submitted a project in the title "Performance enhancement of solar system by wrapping paper reflection" of "Inter University Innovation Competition-2016". In the initial phase of screening of 70submissions, based on merit and quality of innovation only 20 projects were selected and called for presentation where our project was in the short list.In the second phase successful candidates staged their presentations andafter the final round through avery stiff and intense competition 10-top notch projects were selected and finalized for this science fair and Alhamdulillah, it's a matter of great felicity and great moment of proud to inform you that our project secured a place out of that 10 best selections. And without any doubt, it's indeeda great achievements and inspiration for our students and a great pride for our university. To make this project and fair successful, a team of 4 members were consisted byMr. Md. Abdullah al Mahmud , Lecturer,Md. Mehedi Hasan (4th Year /1st semester) , Md. Minhazul Islam (4th Year /1st semester) Mr. Mizanur Rahman, Ex-UAP student, EEE and supervised byMr. A.H.M. Zadidul karim, Associate Professor, Mr. Md. Masum Howlader, Assistant Professor.

 

 

 

UAP IEEE students attend a summit at AIUB, Banani-Dhaka

The IEEE UAP Student Branch attended “IEEE Bangladesh Section Student Branch Ex-Com Summit 2016”at American International University Bangladesh (AIUB) auditorium, Banani, Dhaka on 25th March, 2016 organized by IEEE Bangladesh Section.

It was attended by representatives of all student branches around the country as well as all members of current IEEE Bangladesh Section Committee including Dr. Shaikh Anowarul Fattah, Chair, IEEE BDS. The main motivation of the summit was to increase interactions among the branches of Bangladesh Section. In the event, every representative presented their work plan of its IEEE SB for the next session and above all, discussed about problems/difficulties with the section members.

EEECC and 24th Batch organized a film festival for freshers'

  • 9th may 2017

The Cultural Club and 24th batch of EEE department jointly organized a film festival for fresher's students at Sports Room; UAP city campus on 9th may 2017 from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

To entertain the fresher's students the 24th was made a short film named "BondhuBritto" with self-participation. A film named "Dipu No 2" and short film "BondhuBritto" was enjoyed faculties, students of different semester and specially the fresher's.
 

 

 

Sports Activities

 

Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) beat Department of English in “Inter-Departmental Cricket Tournament- Fall 2018”

  • January 13-15, 2019

 

UAP Cricket Club organised the “Inter-Departmental Cricket Tournament- Fall 2018” from January 13-15, 2019 at the Clemon Playground, Manik Mia Avenue, Dhaka where all the teams from the eight departments participated with great enthusiasm. In the final match of the tournament held on January 15, 2019, Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE) beat Department of English in an exciting game. English won the toss and chose to field first. EEE scored a total of 150 runs by 6 wickets. However, Department of English was all out in 106 runs due to devastating bowling by EEE. EEE won the championship by 44 runs.

Man of the Match was Hasan Mahmud Sourov from EEE who brilliantly scored 48 runs and took 1 important wicket. Nahid Ifty from EEE was the Man of the Series who took 11 wickets in the whole tournament. The supporters of both teams made the match a lively one.

UAP Pro Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. M. R. Kabir was present as the Chief Guest while Air Cdre (Retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Treasurer & Director, DSW; Dr. Tapan Kumar Chakraborty, Professor & Head, EEE, along with a number of faculty members and hundreds of students from both departments enjoyed the final match. Mr. A. H. M Zadidul Karim, Associate Professor, Department of Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering and Adviser, UAP Cricket Club coordinated the tournament and made it a great success.

 

 

 

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering wins the Inter-Department Football Championship 2018

  • 04-06 August 2018

 

UAP Football Club under the direction of Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW) organized the “Inter-Department Football Championship 2018,” from 04-06 August 2018 at BUET Playground. Team from all the eight departments took part in the tournament.

In the final match, held on 06 August 2018, Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering defeated Department of Civil Engineering by 2-0 in a thrilling match. Supporters of both teams made the match lively and enjoyable.

Air Cdre (Retd.) IshfaqI lahi Choudhury, Director, DSW, Dr. Muhammad Mizanur Rahaman, Prof. and Head, Department of Civil Engineering and a number of faculty members and staff were present to encourage the players. The tournament was coordinated by Md. Saleh Akram, Lecturer, Department of Law and Human Rights, and Advisor, UAP Football Club.

 

 

 

EEE outplay in UAP Inter-Dept. Football Tournament

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) notched a facile 1-0 goal victory over the Department of Law and Human Rights in the final match of the UAP Inter-Department Football Tournament held at the BUET playground on August 21, 2016. Sports subcommittee, UAP arranged a prize giving ceremony for inter departmental sports spring 2016.

Professor Dr. M. R. Kabir, Acting Vice Chancellor, graced the occasion as Chief Guest and he distributed prizes among the winners. Departmental Heads, faculties, students and staff were present at the occasion. Prizes were distributed among participants of different competitions viz. Table tennis, Carom, Chess and Football.
