  • The Department of English at Uap has been awarded the grade “Very Good” by the External Peer Review Team consisting of international and local education experts to evaluate the quality of degree awarding programs of any universities of Bangladesh. This event of assessment is facilitated and monitored by the University Grant Commission of Bangladesh under the Higher Education Quality Enhancement Program (HEQEP). It is also a matter of pride that all departments of UAP that are offering Bachelor degrees also been awarded the grade of “Very Good”.

  • Arpita Haque, Lecturer, Department of English, UAP has been awarded with a prize in recognition of her securing the first position in her M.A. in Applied Linguistics and ELT. The prize was awarded by the English Department Alumni Society, University of Dhaka on January 25, 2019.

  • Dr Abu Shahid Abdulllah, Lecturer has been conferred Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. Phil.) degree by the Faculty of Humanities, Otto-Friedrich University Bamberg, Germany. The title of his dissertation was "Speaking the Unspeakable: Traumatic Experience and Repressed Memory in Magical Realist Novels".

  • Sadia Afrin Shorna, Lecturer, Department of English, UAP presents a Paper entitled "Providing Effective Feedback to ESL Learners” in the 21st International Conference in Nepal.Sadia Afrin Shorna, Lecturer, Department of English, UAP presented a Paper entitled "Providing Effective Feedback to ESL Learners” in the 21st International Conference of Nepal English Language Teachers' Association(NELTA) which was held from 7 March to 9 March, 2016 in Kathmandu, Nepal. In this event she talked about how feedback can be effective tool for students to correcting their mistakes and also highlighted the strategy for providing feedback.The keynote speaker of the program was Ruth Ben from Barry University in Miami Shores, FL and Peter Medgyes Professor Emeritus of Applied Linguistics and Language Pedagogy from Eötvös Loránd University Budapest.

Ms. Ismat Zarin, Assistant Professor and Iffat Jahan Suchona, Lecturer, faculty members of the Department of English, were invited to adjudicate at the National Public Speaking Festival- SPEAK FOR CHANGE, organized by Evolution 360 (a UN affiliated youth-led organization) held on March 15, 2019 at the University of Dhaka premises.

The national event was organized to promote changes in the mindset of youth with regard to gender perception through a public speaking contest among secondary, higher secondary and tertiary level students of the country.

Students' Achievements

 

  • Inter-University Student Conference and Cultural Competition 2019 : Runner-up

University of Liberal Arts, Bangladesh (ULAB) organized the fifth Inter-University Student Conference and Cultural Competition at its permanent campus on April 18 -19, 2019. Fifteen public and private universities participated in the academic session on the first day. Two students from the Department presented their papers in the academic session. Five universities took part in the competition for the cultural competition crown. The judges were Dr. Chidananda Bhattacharya; Dr. Kirsten Hackenbroch, Director, Goethe-Institute, Dhaka; and Ziaul Karim, Head of Brand & Communication, Eastern Bank Ltd. 
The Department of English of UAP secured the runner-up position in the cultural segment of the competition. The event was based on the theme “The Romantic and the Gothic” and had two segments: an academic session and a cultural competition.  Liaquat Ali Lucky, Director General of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy, was the Chief Guest at the closing ceremony.  He appreciated the performance by the UAP students and invited them to stage the drama at the Shilpakala Academy.

 

  • Inter-University Student Conference and Cultural Competition 2018 : Runner-up

The Department of English, University of Asia Pacific (UAP) successfully took part in the 4th Inter-University Student Conference organized by the Department of English and Humanities, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) on the 20th and 21st April, 2018. UAP team participated both in the academic performances and in the cultural presentations of the conference which was organized to celebrate 200 years of the Bronte siblings, namely Charlotte Bronte and Emily Bronte.

Nabila Ahmed, one of our 4th year 1st semester students presented a paper titled ‘Rethinking Bronte: Women Emancipation in Jane Eyre’ on the 1st day of the conference which was highly appreciated by the panel of judges comprising Professor Razia Sultana and Professor Kashinath Roy and the honoured guests. Our cultural presentation on the 2nd day of the conference secured second position defeating most other participating universities such as Jahangirnagar University, North South University, BRAC University, East West University, University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh etc. The independent panel of judges of this segment included eminent theatre personalities Mr. Ataur Rahman, Ms. Afsana Mimi and Ms. Bonna Mirza. The team from Department of English, University of Dhaka secured the top position in the competition.

Cultural Competition and Awards

  • 1st runner-up, Tasneem Mahmood (a student of third year) for Instant Story Writing (University Level) at the 4th National English Carnival 2018

  • Md. Imamul Muttakin, a student of the 2nd year 2nd semester of the Department, has been awarded by The Daily Star for winning the Reading Competition organized by English Language Club under a project between UAP and The Daily Star. The club organizes regular quiz competitions based on news and features published in The Daily Star and Md. Imamul Muttakin emerged as the top perfomer in UAP.
