Webinar on "Smile Healthy in Changed Routine'’

UAP Social Awareness Club organized a webinar titled "Smile Healthy in Changed Routine'' in association with Unilever Bangladesh on 21 September 2020. The program was live on the university's official Facebook page. On July 24, 2020, The Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), in association with Entrepreneurship and Career Development Club (ECDC), UAP, and WSDA New Zealand, organized an interactive webinar on “From Flight to Face: Post COVID Career Choices 1.0 with a tagline Unlock your true Potential”.

The keynote speaker of the webinar was Dr. Tahsin Raquib Abonti, Assistant Professor, Department of Orthodontic, Pioneer Dental College, and Hospital. Air Cdre (retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Treasurer, and Director, DSW was present as a special guest. In this
webinar, Dr. Tahsin Raquib Abonti focused on the changes in our daily routine because of the COVID-19 pandemic situation. Ms. Abonti demonstrated different oral hygiene methods and described how to maintain an ideal food habit for proper oral hygiene.

Faysal Ahmed, Senior Executive of Social Awareness Club, UAP described the regular activities of Social Awareness Club. Ms. Mahjabeen Gazi, Adviser, Social Awareness Club expressed thanks to the energetic members of the club for making this event successful. Students from different departments joined the webinar.

 

Webinar on “Be aware and Be Productive: Dealing with the new normal

On 17 July 2020, the Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), in association with Social Awareness Club, arranged a webinar on “Be aware and Be Productive: Dealing with the New Normal”. Ahmed Hossain, Ph.D., Professor of Public Health and Director, Global Health Institute, North South University was the technical expert to this webinar while Air Cdre (Retd.) IshfaqIlahi Choudhury, Treasurer, and Director, DSW, UAP joined the program as one of the discussants.

In his presentation, Mr. Hossain has shown a comparative statement of COVID-19 cases and death rates of South Asian countries compare to other western and European countries. Mr. Hossain advised the students to continue their regular activities abide by health hygiene, e. g.i) hand hygiene involves sanitizing and washing hands frequently & ii) respiratory hygiene; wearing masks along with maintaining social distancing. In his presentation, he also made some recommendations to the students to keep well and safe during this pandemic at stay-at-home period; wake up early in the morning, make a daily to-do list, read books and learn something, nourish the body
with healthy food, take some physical exercise, be careful of using social media, and limit yourself from exposure to news and COVID-19.

Air Cdre (Retd.) IshfaqIlahi Choudhury depicted a global scenario, especially the neighboring countries of Bangladesh. He also inspired the participants to be productive while maintaining health-related protocols. The webinar was also addressed by Ms. MahzabinGazi, Assistant Prof., Pharmacy, and Advisor, Social Awareness Club, Mr. Tarek Khan, Assistant Director, and Ms. Farjana Yasmin, Socio Counsellor, DSW. There was a Q&A session where students took part enthusiastically.

 

Social Awareness Club organized a Blood Donation Camp

UAP Social Awareness Club arranged a voluntary Blood Donation Camp in collaboration with the Quantum Foundation on November 20, 2019, at UAP Plaza. The camp started at 10 am in the morning and continued till 4 pm. Students from different departments attended voluntarily in the campaign. Air Cdre (Retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Director, DSW, faculty members, and members of the club were present during the blood donation camp. 26 donors were screened for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, AIDS, and Malaria free of cost. They were also given a donor card from the Quantum Foundation. Ms. Mahjabeen Gazi, Assistant Prof., Department of Pharmacy and Adviser, Social Awareness Club organized the program along with the members of the club.

Seminar on Thalassemia Awareness and Blood Donation Camp

Social Awareness Club, UAP under the direction of the Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), in association with the Rotary Club of Motijheel, and Bangladesh Thalassemia Foundation organized a day-long program titled “Seminar on Thalassemia Awareness and Voluntary Blood Donation Camp” on April 18, 2019, at UAP.

The seminar on Thalassemia Awareness started at 10:30 am in the UAP Auditorium and continued till 12 PM. The voluntary blood donation camp started at 10:00 am in the Plaza and continued till 4 PM. Students from different departments attended voluntarily the camp. In the seminar, the audience was briefed regarding the dangers of the disease and how to take safeguard against its spread.

The donors were screened for Thalassemia, Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, HIV, and Malaria free of cost. After the check-up of the medical team, a total of 49 units of blood was donated by students of the university in the day-long camp.

The seminar was attended by Mr. Monzoor Ahmed Chowdhury, Honourable Chairperson, Board of Trustees; Prof. Dr. M.R. Kabir, Honourable Pro-Vice-Chancellor; Air Cdre (Retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Director, DSW; Mr. Sarwer R. Chowdhury, Registrar; Ms. Mahjabeen Gazi, Adviser, UAP Social Awareness Club, faculty members of UAP.

Among others, high-ranking officials from different Rotary Clubs, Universal Medical College and Hospital Ltd., and Bangladesh Thalassemia Foundation also attended the program. Over 150 students from different departments joined the seminar with enthusiasm and showed keen interest to know about thalassemia.

 

Voluntary “Blood Donation Camp”

UAP Social Awareness Club organized a voluntary “Blood Donation Camp” in cooperation with the Quantum Foundation on 22 January 2019 at UAP Plaza.

The camp started at 10.00 am in the morning and continued till 5.00 pm. Students from different departments attended voluntarily in the campaign.

Professor Dr. Mohiduddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, Head, Department of Pharmacy, Md. Tarek Khan, Assistant Director, DSW, and members of the club were present during the blood donation camp. The donors were screened for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, AIDS, and Malaria free of cost. They were also given a donor card from the Quantum Foundation. A total of sixty-three students were registered in the camp. After the check-up facilitated by Quantum Foundation’s Team, a total of 49 units of blood was donated by students of the university in the day-long camp.

Seminar on ‘ABC of Drugs & Addiction: Let’s Understand Drugs & Addiction for Better Prevention’

The Social Counseling Centre and the Social Awareness Club of the University of Asia Pacific (UAP) organized a seminar on ‘ABC of Drugs & Addiction: Let’s Understand Drugs & Addiction for Better Prevention’ on 13 December 2018 at the DBA Seminar Room of UAP.

Air Cdre (Retd) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Director, DSW inaugurated the seminar with his welcome speech. The seminar then was facilitated by Dr. Ashique Selim, Lead Consultant Psychiatrist & Managing Director, PHWC. Dr. Selim first oriented the participants about what addiction actually is and then he talked about different kinds of drugs. While talking about the types he was also referring to the consequences of having those drugs. The way he broke the connotation of ‘addiction’ by bringing the perspective of cultural and social norms was so fascinating to the participants. The paradigm shift among the participants about the concept of addiction made the participants spontaneous and led them to talk more openly about their concerns related to drugs and addiction. The participants were keen to seek information about different types of drugs, understand more deeply what addiction actually is, and the possible ways to become free from drugs and addiction.

Mr. Selim also talked about non-substance addictions like the internet, virtual games, and gambling. It was quite an interactive session where more than sixty students participated. The session became further enriched with the historical knowledge and social perspectives of drugs by the Director, DSW.

Among others, Ms. Mahjabeen Gazi, Assistant Professor, and adviser of Social Awareness Club, Mr. Md. Rakibul Hasan and Ms. Saima Akhter, Socio Counselor, UAP were present.

 

UAP distributes School Dress among the unprivileged children

On 16 May 2018, UAP Social Awareness Club under the direction of Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), and in association with Western Union and Radio Today, distributed school dress among the students of “Dikkhaloy,” a school for the underprivileged children in a remote village named Shuhilpur in Brahmanbaria district.

Eleven students of UAP volunteered to make a smile to the unprivileged children under the project titled “From You to Them with Love Right Now”, sponsored by Western Union. Recently, three of the team members shared their experience in voluntary works at Radio Today, a leading FM Radio in Dhaka.

A total of 240 (Two hundred and forty) school uniforms were distributed. The student volunteers also erected a fence to protect the kids from an adjacent pond which was considered a great risk for them. The project was coordinated by Ms. Mahjabeen Gazi, Assistant Professor, Department of Pharmacy and Adviser, Social Awareness Club, and Md. Tarek Khan, Assistant Director, DSW and guided by Air Cdre Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury (Retd.), Director, DSW, UAP. DSW organizes a number of programs throughout the year in the areas of personal development, volunteerism, and social responsibilities to raise social awareness among the students.

 

Social Awareness Club organized a Blood Donation Program

On 14 May 2018, Social Awareness Club, under the direction of the Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW), organized a voluntary Blood Donation Campaign in cooperation with the Quantum Foundation. A large number of students from different departments of the university cheerfully participated in the program.

The program started at 10:00 am and continued till 5:00 pm at UAP Plaza. Ms. Mahjabeen Gazi, Advisor of the Social Awareness Club and Md. Tarek Khan, Assistant Director of DSW were present at the inaugural ceremony. During the campaign total 53 volunteers participated in the registration process and after preliminary on-site medical screening for health history, body weight, and blood pressure nearly 41 individuals were finally selected for blood donation.

The donors were screened for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, AIDS, Malaria free of cost. They were also given a donor card from the Quantum Foundation. With this card, they and their family members will get blood easily at the time of need from the Quantum Foundation.

Social Awareness Club honored the donors with a token of appreciation for their valuable contribution to this noble task. Generally, the club recognizes donors, who have donated blood more than three times.

 

Seminar on Gratification

Social Awareness Club, UAP under the direction of the Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW) organized a Seminar on Gratification on Monday, January 29th at room no. 414, Department of Pharmacy. Kazi Shamim, Head of Sales Training, Orion Pharma Ltd. addressed the seminar as the keynote presenter. Faculty members and students from different departments attended the seminar.

Mr. Shamim conveyed a message to the audience that “self-gratification” is the pursuit of happiness. The seminar highlighted lifestyle factors that create negative emotions, especially in student life, and showed the possible strategies to overcome the impediments by self-gratification. He also discussed the origins and sources of the appeal of the ‘gratifications’ paradigm and reviewed the social origins of gratifications and the interplay of gratifications and its effects. The program was concluded by meditation on gratification. Md. Ariful Huda Ashik, President, Social Awareness Club coordinated the seminar.

 

Social Awareness Club organized a Blood Donation Program

Social Awareness Club under the direction of Directorate of Students’ Welfare (DSW) organized a Blood Donation Program in cooperation with the Quantum Foundation on 22 November 2017. Prof. Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury, Vice-Chancellor inaugurated the day-long donation program as chief guest. In his speech, he highlighted creating awareness among the students and society as a whole about the values of voluntary blood donation.

Air Cdre (Retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Director, DSW, Mr. Sarwar Razzaq Chowdhury, Registrar, Professor Dr. Mohiduddin Ahmed Bhuiyan, Head, Department of Pharmacy, Md. Tarek Khan, Assistant Director, DSW, faculty members, and members of the Social Awareness Club were present at the inaugural ceremony of the blood donation program. There were a total of 94 blood donors who were screened for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, AIDS, Malaria free of cost. The donors were also given a donor card from the Quantum Foundation. In the afternoon, a Donor Award Giving Ceremony was arranged. Air Cdre (Retd.) Ishfaq Ilahi Choudhury, Director (DSW) was present as the chief guest of the ceremony. In his speech, he said that we should come forward to saving humanity by blood donation and appreciated the awareness of students in the voluntary blood donation program. Twelve donors were awarded for donating blood for at least three consecutive times.

Mahjabeen Gazi, Advisor, Social Awareness Club, and Dr. Engr. Md. Mahmudul Hasan, Member, Social Awareness Club worked together to make the program a success.

 

Blood donation program at UAP

Social Awareness Club, UAP has conducted a Blood Donation Program in cooperation with the Quantum Foundationon15-16 May 2017. In this camp, an overwhelming number of volunteers from different departments of the university have participated with cheerfulness.

The program started in the morning and continued till 5:00 pm at UAP Plaza. Students were the major donors and faculties were the motivators. During the camp total, 120 volunteers participated in the registration process, and after preliminary on-site medical screening for health history, body weight, and blood pressure nearly 94 individuals were selected for the donation. These 94 donors were screened for Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, Syphilis, AIDS, Malaria free of cost. The donors were also given a donor card from the Quantum Foundation. With this card, they and their family members will get blood at times of need from the Quantum Foundation. Social Awareness Club honored the donors by light refreshment with a token of appreciation for their valuable contribution in this noble task. Usually, the club recognized donors, who have donated blood more than three times.

MahjabeenGazi, advisor of the Social Awareness Club congratulated the donors for their noble contribution and thanked the university authority for organizing this blood donation camp before Ramadan. She also thanked the team of the Social Awareness Club for their endless strength to make this event successful.

 

  • Seminar on “Early Detection and Challenges of Breast Cancer in Bangladesh” at UAP

 

Social Awareness Club, UAP jointly organized a seminar with Blue Sky Charitable Foundation (BSCF) titled “Early Detection and Challenges of Breast Cancer in Bangladesh” on Wednesday, July 12th at the seminar room of DBA.

Prof. Dr. Qamruzzaman Chowdhury, Director (Medical Service) and Head (Radiation Oncology Department), Ahsania Mission Cancer, and General Hospital addressed the seminar as the keynote presenter. Mr. Nizam Chowdhury, Chairman, NRB Global Bank Limited as the Speaker, while Ms. Ayesha Siddiqua Shelley, Head of Advisory Committee, BSCF was present as the Chairperson of the seminar. Medical Consultants and representatives of BSCF were present at the seminar. Faculty members and students from different departments have attended the seminar.

The presentation of the keynote speaker was very motivating, instructive, and interactive. More than 90 participants attended the seminar and the message was clear: Prioritise your health and get regular checks. Prof. Dr. Qamruzzaman Chowdhury was eager to speak that the early diagnosis of breast cancer has a 90% survival rate. The seminar featured an update on the latest information about hereditary and lifestyle factors that affect cancer risk, plus screening recommendations for early detection of the disease.

The program was finally concluded with a vote of thanks by Dr. Zabun Nahar, Department of Pharmacy. Mahjabeen Gazi, Advisor, Social Awareness Club, and Waheeda Nasreen, Convener, Pharmacy Social Awareness Club have accompanied the seminar. Md. Ariful Huda Ashik, President, Social Awareness Club has coordinated the seminar. Frequently asked questions including the risk factors and management of the disease were addressed by the consultants and doctors presented in the seminar. The participants were given gifts by Aristopharma Limited.
